“My grandfather, who was the imam [teacher] of the mosque in Algeria, used to take me with him to the mosque every day to recite the Qur’an. I grew up in a Muslim conservative environment. At the age of twenty-six I moved to Germany and married a fine German lady. A month later, I managed to convert my wife to Islam, and I taught her all the required rituals. My family, back in Algeria, celebrated this event. Fourteen months ago, I started to watch Al Hayat. To my surprise I watched three Algerian men speaking nice and comforting words about God, but I became upset and turned off the TV when I discovered that they were Christians. I promised never to watch this channel again. I could not keep my promise. This time I watched an elderly man saying things that really shocked me about Islam. I turned the TV off again. A week later, I came back [to Al Hayat] and watched the host, who continued to shock me until he said, “Regret will not help you if it’s too late.” Then he continued to break down my nerves, belief, and the image of Islam before my eyes. I ordered a copy of the Bible and started to read it. I found it clear and easy to understand. Last Ramadan I surprised my wife and her family when I was born again. My wife cried and told me that there is nothing in the Qur’an that touches her heart but that it was her love for me that led her to accept Islam. I bought her a copy of the Bible and asked her forgiveness for misleading her and our children in the past years.” ~Mohamed, MBB
